FAT
- the International Fair Trade Association - is a
world-wide network of Fair Traders in more than 50 countries.
Its members include producer associations in Latin America,
Africa and Asia, and Fair Trade marketing organizations
from North and South.
It is the only international network that represents the
whole Fair Trade chain from production to sale.
IFAT's mission is to improve the livelihoods and well-being
of disadvantaged producers by linking and promoting Fair
Trading organizations, and speaking out for greater justice
in world trade.
IFAT was formed in 1989, following a conference of Alternative
Trading Organizations ("ATOs") in The Netherlands.
Since 1989 IFAT has grown steadily as a global network.
Southern organizations starting to join after the first
biennial conference in Ireland in 1991, and now represent
over 2/3 of membership. IFAT is facilitated by a full-time
secretariat in the UK, and an elected committee of five
representatives, one from each of the regions. IFAT is the
only global grouping of ATOs that represents both North
and South. Its day to day work is funded entirely though
member subscription fees.
